They usually start out with "you didn't hear this from me but." I'm sure every person on this forum has at one point or another gotten some "under the table advice" from a mechanic, salesperson, whatever. The reason they tell you not to use M1 75w90 is because they probably haven't done any extensive testing to verify its compatability with a wet clutch. If a Mobile engineer gets on the phone and tells someone "oh yeah, go ahead and use (insert oil type) for (insert application), they open themselves up to liability if something goes wrong. They said that the M1 V-Twin is the only oil they can RECOMMEND for a sportster's wet clutch/primary. When you're dealing with an "official statement" from a company spokesperson, semantics are everything. THis oil meets all of HD's specification and then some and is the only lubricant that would satisfy warranty requirements. They flipped me up higher on the food chain and this "engineer" told me to ABSOLUTELY NOT use M1 75W-90, that this lubricant has friction and viscosity modifiers that are not compatible with wet clutches!!! She said the only oil they could recommend to use in the sportster was M1 V-Twin 20W-50. My intial thought was also to run M1 Vtwin in the engine and M1 75W-90 in the gearbox then the Mobil tech said not to and another said it was preferable.Įdit: I just spoke with Mobil yet again and told them of the multiple different answers I was getting. Hey oldfender, I just called Mobil again to clarify and this guy said the Mobil 1 75W-90 would be the preferable oil to use in the tranny/primary and that is did not contain friction modifiers :censor who the hell knows what the right answer is?

Bike primary runs quieter, shifts better, less "clunk", and the main thing is that I just feel better running a gear oil in the tranny. I wasn't sure about using 75W-90 gear oil in the Sportster combination tranny/primary, but when I found out that some of the HD mechanics I know were running it in their Sportster's (without any problems) I dumped out the Mobil 1 20W-50 V-Twin and added the 75W-90.Īfter a few hundred miles I noticed a big difference. In the BT's we always ran the Mobil 75W-90 in the tranny, but of course transmission fluid wasn't combined and used with the wet clutch primary. I've been riding Big Twin's since the 1970's, but had never owned a Sportster until recently purchased the 2005 1200C.
